Cardiac ultrasound (transthoracic) is by far the most extensively used imaging modality for the diagnosis of cardiac disease. A non-invasive modality that does not use ionizing radiation, cardiac ultrasound is commonly used to assess overall cardiac function, left and right ventricular ejection fraction, to show blood flow within chambers, valve function, thrombus, fluid accumulation, congenital heart diseases.
Doppler techniques are generally used in transthoracic cardiac ultrasound to observe blood flow and blood pressure in the arteries of the heart. Patients should take all of their medications at the usual times, as prescribed by the doctor. Cardiac ultrasound is a safe, painless, and comfortable test.
